How we assess the tooth
Your dentist will discuss your symptoms and medical history, examine the tooth and surrounding tissues, and may perform sensitivity or biting tests. Dental radiographs are commonly needed to assess the roots and surrounding bone.

Stages of root canal treatment
Diagnosis and pain management: the tooth is assessed and local anaesthetic is used where appropriate.
Access and cleaning: an opening is made in the tooth. Inflamed or infected tissue is removed and the canals are carefully cleaned and shaped.
Disinfection and temporary sealing: medication may be placed and the tooth may be temporarily sealed between visits.
Root filling: the prepared canals are sealed with a root-filling material.
Final restoration: a durable filling, onlay or crown may be recommended to protect the remaining tooth structure.
Benefits, limitations and alternatives
Root canal treatment may allow a compromised natural tooth to be retained. However, no dental treatment can guarantee that a tooth will remain symptom-free or last indefinitely.
Possible alternatives include monitoring in selected cases, extraction, or referral for specialist assessment.
If a tooth is removed, replacement options may include an implant, bridge, partial denture or leaving the space, depending on the circumstances.
Some teeth require retreatment, endodontic surgery or extraction if infection persists or returns.
After treatment
Mild tenderness can occur for several days. Follow the instructions provided and avoid heavy chewing on a temporarily restored tooth. Contact the practice if pain or swelling is increasing, if you develop fever or feel unwell, or if a temporary restoration is lost. Complete the final restoration within the recommended timeframe.

Does root canal treatment hurt?
Local anaesthetic is commonly used. Comfort varies with the condition of the tooth, and some tenderness after treatment is possible. Tell us promptly if you are uncomfortable.
How many appointments are needed?
Some teeth can be treated in one visit, while others need several. The number depends on infection, anatomy, symptoms and treatment complexity.
Do I need a crown afterwards?
Not every tooth requires a crown, but back teeth and teeth with substantial loss of structure often need cuspal coverage. Your dentist will recommend the restoration suited to the tooth.
Can an infected tooth heal without treatment?
Symptoms can fluctuate, but infection inside a tooth does not usually resolve permanently without dental treatment. Delaying assessment may allow the problem to progress.
When might a specialist referral be recommended?
Referral to an endodontist may be appropriate for complex anatomy, retreatment, significant calcification, difficult diagnosis, dental trauma or other factors.
